My recent experience, inserting the birthday with the date picker takes effort for customers. I agree with you that it’s better applying the date picker than using three input boxes. Most of the time we ask the customer’s birthday which is faster to type the numbers with the numeric on-screen keyboard.
When you apply the date picker with birthday form, you could do a minimum age setup. For example, if the site requires the customers over 18 years old, the date picker display starting 18 years old calendar not starting today’s date and year. Again I agree not to use the date picker with birthday form. It context matters, we have to be careful.
